I've been hearing about people saying that they were going to send their mercs "independent." What does that mean? Is it useful/profitable?

I'll tell you what I know cos I haven't done it already :)
It means that you set free a merc who has reached the lvl 100, instead of firing him or putting him in the merc room.
From time to time, this merc will send you gifts that'll help you.
And setting a merc free is, I think, a requirement in the quest to obtain the spartan.
Ask people who've done it already to get more info, hope this helps anyway ;)

It's not a requirement at all but you need an item which can only be obtainable from an independent merc, the xxx soul stone, in all B class mercs (xxx being either colorful shiny or rainbow).
Upon release the merc will ask for stuff every day and then send you something every 6 days. The amount of stuff he sends your is proportional to his might so you should spend all his bonus points and potential points if applicable.
When the independent merc hits 60 he will retire and stop asking for/sending stuff

not to be too demanding or anything, but can someone post a step by step thing to independent mercs? I'm still a little confused.

There's some nice info from the Help screen:

So it's kinda a requirement anyway :D
By the way, if those soul stones are needed for all the B-class mercs, can one independent merc send several or do you have to set free more than one of your mercs ?

One independent merc can send you several. It's all luck, of course (assuming you keep their friendship level maxed by making sure to listen to their requests every day)
I got multiple shiny soulstones from my one independent merc so far. And yea, some people have gotten all 3 types from one merc (lucky!)

you send more mercs, you have more chances of obtaining more stuffs,
Be sure to send off mercs that have more might though, as the amount of item recieved is dependent on the Might of that Merc, this can mean a difference of 1 or 2 soul stones.
