View Full Version : Best time to start PvP?

I'm new to this game, and am highly interested in the turn based approach to PvP. What's a good time to start? Are players matched evenly? What kind of equipment do I need?
The first time I signed up for FL, I was lvl 30 and went up against an opponent with 8 mercs and gear I had never seen. Needless to say, I got trounced. I don't mind getting beat, but that wasnt a fair fight. Are opponents matched at all? Should I wait till I get a full 8 mercs and decent gear?

I would say yes, or probably try to FL during peak hour times, so thers a better chance you'll be matched up someone more ur level.

So there IS a matching system, but if no ones around your lvl...its noob sandwich time!

The matching system is something like this:
18 division, 18 being the n00b div.
you r matched with some1 your div, or the closest div to it (lol noob sandwich time xDxD)
as u win more continous matches u advance to the next div, but if u lose continusly your are moved down.
This sometimes gets high lvls who r on a losing streak to low div (till the r too gigh lvl to lose lol), and low lvls to high div (where they get pwned lol) xD
when u fiight u get money in the form of coins and shards, which u trade to NPC for money; from div 10 and up u get like 100k if u win
u also get battle points which u can trade for equipment boxes
and fame points to get cool titles :D

So most of the times, the fight won't be fair. However, if the number of mercs is part of your worry, at lv50, you will have a full team. Even then, the kinds of mercs you have and those of your opponent won't match (ex, opponent gets exo and you don't etc etc) So there's no real balance unless you get really really lucky.
PvP at low levels helps you develop some skills applicable in your PVE, such as placement of your mercs, moving mercs, etc.
While it's no fun occasionally raped by a level 70 who's in Div18 for some reason, any level around peak times (as Arietta said) is good.
You will always have some lowbie merc you just recruited, or some gear level you're just about to reach, so it's not really practical to try to wait until you're somehow "ready" with everything you need.

I took all your advice, and used what I've read from these forums and had some free league fun last night with this build
LVL 37 axe main
:malehero:---------:swm:
:spm::vik::spm:
:sha:---------:mnk:
With some slight position variants being tried for different matches. I won all but 2 of the matches - the first time I hit G instead of D and lost, but beat that person the 2nd time around. The second time, it was against a higher lvl player in div 16, which I had JUST placed into. Full mercs, and a beast master, but I was still able to focus fire and punch a hole in the front line and bring his main to critical (who puts a staff main, right behind a viking?)
But I guess you could say, "Olmec, who puts their axe main up front at lvl 37?"
I did notice something odd about my low level free league opponents, they tend to lack shamans, and more strangely, MONKS. I was stunning people without even trying, and with TWO freeze axes / brutal willed spears....I think it aggravated people. USE your monks people!
THANKS for all the advice!

Full 9 mercs (including your main), buddy, not 8. btw, i started at abt 50+ in earnest, thats when I have a full formation

I would advocate starting to pvp as soon as it becomes feasible (level 30 or so in my opinion) especially if you are new to the game, or the pvp aspect of the game. You can definitely expect to fight your fair share of pitched battles, and you will likely lose...a lot, but to be honest you aren't going to run into too many people in the lower divisions who know what they are doing so once you become you take a few knocks with a decent formation you will start pulling off major upsets. Don't get discouraged pvping at low-mid levels has one purpose, and that is to get you firmly entrenched in the learning the curve of competitive pvp, try to take something away from every loss, even if you get your ass kicked by some level 50 when you are only level 29. I would also highly advocate watching weekly championships whenever possible, better yet find players with matching mains who perform well in the tournaments and observe them often. Not only will you gain insight into effective formation, but if you pay close attention you will also pick up a few tactics and tricks along the way.

plus, some shadow dungeons will soon need fame to enter... and the sparring hall in rome is a pain to do to get fame :(

Can you tell more about this arietta plz? which dungeons requires fame and how much

You don't really need exact figures for fame requirements in dungeons. The highest fame requirement is 100 and if you do free league 2-3 times you'll never hit fame restrictions later.

You can look up level and fame requirements in the field info in the game. But basically, it's shadow dungeons that require fame. If you don't want to do FL, then you can do sparring hall in Rome. Currently the most fame needed is 50 - my guess is it'll go higher when there's more game content, but it'll never go above 100.

Its easy enough to get 50-100 fame anyway so shouldn't be much of an issue.

You should start early, maybe around 25 when u got angkor wats and asura weapons.
I regreted not starting early... Now i am facing div 15-13 peeps who are more experienced coz they started early...
well you even get fame points if you lose in fl....
so not a big deal though lol...100 is piece of cake

Different divison nets you different fame points if you win. Not sure the actual but higher division nets like 20 while lower nets like 4 per win.
