4 words for you :o
No Awakening = Death.
Almost all the PVP builds I seen so far tends to stun the opponent. So monks are very reliable, unless, of course, if you can find a way without a monk, it's okay. :o

Well, nothing is compulsory, you can do whatever you want :P
But lets just say you wouldn't too well in pvp without one (I don't think I've ever lost to someone that didn't have a monk).

for pvp it's necessary. i don't use a monk, and i can beat people >5 levels lower than me, but if they're in the same level range, it's gonna be a real tough battle.
for pve he's not at all necessary though

You're going to want a monk. You can't rely on scrolls.

Well... Why wouldn't you want a monk. Healing your main (and making him harder to kill as well) and awakeing are two great skills, and the other two are icing. He is overall a very very good merc.

he doesnt look cool... but his utility makes him a staple in any team, pve or pvp. If you dont, enjoy watching ur tanks get stunned then getting steamrolled the next round in PvE.

Like everyone have said, its your solution to status infliction and stunning. If you go without one, you better have some creative way to spread the combos so you're team ends with combo +2 on every merc and it doesn't change into +3.

I've yet to see any decent pvp formation without a monk either. Highly recommend you rotate 1 in... =)

You MIGHT be able to survive without one in PvE with clever rotating of mercs to prevent stuns (also, your mercs can jump in and out of the merc room if you have backup mercs there... except your main, of course), but PvP, not having one gives your opponent too many different ways of completely screwing you over.

I agree, in PvP its a MUST have....

Monk is not a must have but if you really want to do well in pvp you will find him a major boost toward that goal. Even if you vs a non stun team holy guard , protection and awaking can do wonders to change the outcome of a match. he is one of the few merc where you would really learn all his skill even if i means not maxing any of them cuz they are just that useful. But everyone have their opinion and their play style so if you really dont like a monk just figure a way to play without one but just pray you dont meet a cannon heavy team or else it si all red circle over your head.
Monk is a must both in pvp and pve. Bosses (eg. Loki) hurt, and you want that holy guard on one of your rows. Same with awakening, if you want to grind alone, your front line will be stunned, so awakening is a must. In pvp you will be using awakening a lot, even every turn if facing stun build. Or else half or more of your team will be stunned.

I use my monk in PVE mostly for protect and Holy Guard. At higher lvls, some mobs can use lightning spear and flame sword on your front row and they tend to focus on 1 merc at a time. No holy guard = death there.
As for PVP, I do say holy guard and awakening is both as important.

I have not used my monk with awakening too much in pve but holly guard is a must ... as for pvp I don't do this that much but the few I have the battles been so one sided that there wasn't time to use awakening ( an dyes I have won a couple in fl )

Monk is a staple in almost all the formations I have seen. The most useful mercs in my opinion....can't leave town without it :D

They're a must in pvp. You can do without them in PvE; it saves you a bit of trouble with constantly popping mana potions, though stunning will get quite annoying after a while.

At the early lv of the game awakening is that use too often in pve. But as you move up in lv with more adds and lots of focus fire AI, you will be so glad you have awakening because once they stun that merc and continue to focus fire on him/her , he will drop so fast you would be crying.
a monk is up there with the exo and the main in importance for pvp.his holy guard and awakening is immensely useful starting from insect nest(lol go boom hell spiders) to yggdrasil(loki).
no reason to NOT have one.

And not to say that some players actually lvl awakening to subtitute a shaman's heal.
Doesn't heal as much, but still quite reliable.

That's some insane stun D: Yeah and btw, when your mercenaries are stunned, your opponents will deal more melee damage than being unstunned to that particular mercenary.

There are some melee teams that, put away their shaman and will still have their monk and prophet left.
thus..

In pvp monk is really compulsory
In pve you can do without but prepare your frontline to be stunned a lot

Damn that is an ownage stun O.o
It is proof that monk is staple for all builds.

....yea, status ailments in this game are quite nasty, stun included. No monk, and there's nothing you can do to deal with them. It leaves you completely helpless.

Lolz. Yeah, check his age... it is a wonder how he look so old at age 20-ish.
Still, looks aside, he is a pretty cool merc to have. He hits, he heals, he guards and he protects. Kinda like Superman, only older.

There are just to many people with stun builds for it to not be beneficial...

Monks are complusory... even in pve,he is useful, holy guard just saves your ass
monk is needed if you pvp......
scrolls didnt really help that much.....
exo + monk = awaken every turn....
stun = near useless in most cases

If you have an inventor and 2 spears its possible to get a full party stun even if the opposing team has a monk.
Too bad scrolls screw everything up. Scrolls >>> ranged builds.

scrolls should make little difference as you can cancel them?

Interesting question.
Don;t ahve a prophet yet so I've no idea.
However I have noticed that when I cast holy guard on my main, the defense buffer from my monk's protect is removed.
My main is still healed after every turn but since holy guard heals every turn too, not sure if protect's heal is working on HG...
I would imagine not.
Anyone able to verify?

If you get stunned you use Monk --->Awakening
if you get attacked you use monk Shield of Protection -->heals after every attack :) well simply put monk is quite useful he has holy guard too prevents merc from getting poisoned, freezed, mana sealed simply sad from debuffs
