Silence is your friend, and so is chaos wind.
For a sane person, what you want is a tank/semi-tank in the front row:
:swm::bst::exo::lak: and spear or witch (spartan is not considered since it is difficult to get)
some more ranged/soft melees with you in the middle row:
:gun::inv::can::spm::exo: (janissary is strongly discouraged and prophet tends to be useless in an archer main build unless you ar ethe only ranged)
and back row made up of buffers/healers or the occasional witch or cannoneer:
:mnk::sha::ora: -only use princess here if u have 4+ ranged

The advantage of using an archer main is that silence owns and so does chaos wind. I find that DoT works really well in pvp, and you get to wipe out their entire party is they're not careful to holy guard. Your main objective during the first few turns should be to

1.poke a hole in their formation so you can silence the back row (alternating with another archer's silence or mana seal to keep them from casting anything ever again)

2.KEEP their axes silent so you dont have to worry about freezing axe, or simply holy guard your frontline.

The most crucial turn is turn #3, and what you should aim to do in this turn is chaos wind+any other DoT or AoE that you have. USE IT. I suggest including at least 1 cannon in your build since that one cannon can contribute to a lot of stuns =D. An ideal formation would be something like:
:bst::lak::exo:or:witc::lak::spt:
:arc::witc::arc:or:exo::arc::inv:
:ora::can::mnk:or:ora::can::mnk:
and just substitute one of the archers with your main. Silence is deadly for the enemy in completely shutting down their heals and awakenings. Alternating between silence&mana seal will get you a long way in higher end pvp. Also note that the above formation has the most balance, while being focused on AoE damage mostly.

If you have any questions please let me know. And a final note, as an archer main, dont be afraid to move around in formation, your crazy AP regen will allow for it quite often.

I like the formation on the left, since it has the witch in the middle to stop enemy cannons, and it has two archers so that they can alternate silence.

Seems like you've thought it through quite well. However, as far as I know, silences don't reach 3rd row so an axe main would be safe there until someone in the first/second row kicks the dirt. Other than that, the frontline is pretty much like any other.

well form what i see people tend to put their axemain in second row (since he can moderately tank) and stick prophet or cannoneer in the back. The frontline that is getting more popular these days is where you have Exo in the front along with two other semi-sturdy tanks.

Well, let's not rule out the chance that they may move their main back. Do you happen to know if prophet can still use concentration even under silence?

Prophet Concentration buff is like all passive buffs. It lasts for two turns. So you can silence the prophet, but the concentration buff will still be there for one more turn. In order to fully remove it (and then only temporarily until the prophet gets to cast it again), you'll have to keep that prophet silenced for at least two turns.

However, concentration, like all passive buffs besides shield of protection, also heals when the prophet casts it AND when the buff itself is on the character (for two healings every round). Silencing the prophet removes the casting part of that equation, making it only heal once for that round. ...not that that's a big significance in most matches.

in order for silence to reach the back row, at least one of the front / mid row enemies would have to be killed first. apparently, archer main is the winning main on the recently concluded GNGWC 08.

here's the build of the winner: Kiru (taken from this thread (http://atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/ATForum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=8809))

Viking / Exo / BT
Arty / Witch / Archer Main
Prophet / Oracle / Monk

Very detailed observation there Ferishi. Thanks for the info/answer.

I wish they had more info in the GNGWC 08. ex actual footage...geez, what's nDoors doing without their own video recording there, it's free publicity. Then again, it may give away the winner's secrets =D

Lmao, that's the EXACT same build that I have planned for my char. (though I still need to do the prophet and exo quests) It's good to know that it seems to have been a wise choice :P
