From this thread in the official forums:
http://atlantica.ndoorsgames.com/center/ATForum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=8659&posts=59#M77884

So it seems the reason sword mains are weak is because int and dex do nothing for melee damage or performance, and main characters get a more even stat distribution than mercs. Hopefully once they change the stat formulas it'll fix the problems with mains.

We had a long session with the developers today. The employees of nDoors were very kind to us and the developers seemed sincerely concerned about our questions. Pretty much all the nDoors employees were taking notes. They also asked us how we felt about the game and what other games we played in order to get a feel for what we wanted in new games to come. Without further ado here are the answered questions.

1) Will storage space in Rome ever increase?
The developers are considering an inventory increase and extra guild/nation storage areas.

2)When will mentor points be usable?
This feature is coming soon, they haven't decided on what to put it into but they said they have many possibilities. They are also working to improve the mentor system as a whol.

3) Will arena hours ever be changed to accommodate European players?
It really depends on how many European players actually play. Since the fun of the Arena is based on how many players participate if there are not many then it won't be as fun. They will open more arena times when more European players join. "It isn't racism" lol

4) Will the rewards for the Weekly Championships ever be changed up?
They are coming up with ideas for new rewards, if you have any please share your opinion.

5) How do str/dex/int/vit affect a character's attributes and why aren't evasion and critical rate shown in the character info screen?
Right now, except for vit, str/dex/int only apply to its complimenting mercenary type. For example, str ONLY affects melee, dex only affects range, and int only affects magic. More int on a merc will not increase its skill attack. They are in the process of making each stat affect all mercs somehow. They did not give us the exact breakdown for each stat because they said it is the player's job to figure this out; it will take out the fun otherwise. As for evasion and critical rate, this always changes when you battle depending on the level difference of them monster/player. There isn't a real way to show this on the screen.

6) How is nDoors planning to keep Atlantica fresh and exciting for higher levels?
They are planning to add race/faction competitions in terms of level/strength and stuff. They are also adding more special skills for main characters so that mains will begin to lead the mercenaries instead of the other way around. They are also going to add more cool weapons and armors. They also told us that there is a big update with higher level content coming soon within a few months so look out for that.

7)PK before nation wars questions - dropping items - sealing to protect etc...
They are considering better ways to change pk. They might even take out dropping items completely. They might also change it so there is a pvp flagging system or that attackers are only at risk of losing items. They are open to the community's opinion on how pvp should change.

8)Why doesn't nDoors make the Auction house more popular by adding it to each town?
They said that this is a great idea and they will implement it in the future.

Questions brought up during the Q&A session:

1)Will we be able to add stats to unique/special items or weapons/armors.
There are working on a way to implement this.

2)Can you guys make the points show in pvp stay on the screen somewhere instead of briefly appearing after each move?
They thought this was a great idea and will implement it also.

3)Bring back 7 man!
Yes

4)Will we be able to change the looks of mercenaries in the future so we can differentiate our mercs from others?
This is actually a limitation of the Internet. Having unique mercenaries for everyone would cause too many packets to be flying around between the server and players causing lag. There would also be a way bigger client and they need to keep in mind that not all countries have broadband or fast internet. They might implement a way to change the color of your merc's clothing.

The developers were very attentive and answered our questions thoroughly. They would like to hold more Q&A sessions for the players; perhaps a chat room or webcam meeting or something.

As for the two stamina developers, one was on a plane to the USA and the other just started his mandatory military service so they escaped our grasps.

oh wow, so getting 10 str boosts on my monk in a row makes me even sadder now! haha. Sad that the stats are so limited in their usage

odd, so increasing a melee's dex does NOT increase chance to hit? damn...

and i hate how my gunner main has so much damn strength. it's ridiculous.

Drat, the stamina devs escaped, was so hoping to ask one of the visitors to shove a big dull knife into their chests.

Good, as long as they plan on fixing it. Or at least are aware it is a problem

At least the OP of the original post had questioned some of the question that I wanted to ask... Seem like NDoors still very customer friendly and care about how we feel.

Thx for posting the Q&A section here for all to see. Seem Ndoors did a pretty good job answer the questions of course some were disappointing but at least they say they will do future changes and to expect other stuff. Hopefully that major update that si coming is going to be impressive.

Yea, looking forward to the major update. But Hope that we are able to reach that level before they update it.... More time spend on getting to the higher level now..

major update = new merc ? or are we finally getting spartan?

So, let me get this straight.

The devs decided, in their infinite wisdom, to make a stat progression system based almost entirely on luck.

Then, they decide the best complement to this system is to make all but two of these stats useless for every mercenary.

best idea EVER.

Well, at least they realize how silly they were. Kudos, devs.

Er, isn't it confirmed that INT affects mana and magic defense for everyone, including melee mercs?

Also, my staff users sometimes gain more might from a DEX increase than they do from an STR increase. The latter ALWAYS gives only +16 might, but DEX sometimes gives +23 or so might instead (only sometimes, perhaps due to breakpoints when it actually affects... whatever it's affecting). This indicates to me that my staff users are getting SOMETHING from DEX that STR isn't giving them...

I find it strange that they said that vit doesn't affect the character. Are they reading their own code correctly? O_o

thanks for posting that - but omg... that's totally bullshit.
So in order to get good stats on our main char we all have to start over and use refund vials from lvl 1 on?
Let's hope they figure out a better way, soon ;)

Haha yeah...not the server breaking item some people have been whining about.

Er, isn't it confirmed that INT affects mana and magic defense for everyone, including melee mercs?

It is, I just verified by adding/removing int rings. Someone doesn't know what they're talking about, and if it's the developers of the game, this concerns me.

Yea, I've decided not to worry about micro managing my stats via refund vials. That extra INT on my swordsmain might be sub-optimal, but it does SOMETHING, and I am reasonably certain DEX does, too. Actually, since my swordsmain is usually useing a skill instead of normal attack (which is the ONLY thing that STR seems to affect), INT might be more useful than STR for her since it provides more mana, magic defense, and apparently a teeny little bit more skill damage (it's been tested, apparently. But it's negligible)

The one exception might be STR on my staff mercs. They always seem to get crap for Might Gain from STR gain (unlike INT, VIT, and yes, DEX), so presumably STR just plain sucks for them.

Seems I've misread the context of that question's answer. From my experiences, int adds a small amount of mana on all mercs.

Ferishi

INT also adds magic defense (+1 for every 4 or 5 points). This is pretty darn easy stuff to confirm, at least assuming the character stats screen in-game isn't lying (like Diablo 2's stat screen did, sometimes, lol)

And now that I read it, it makes me upset...so STR only helps certain mercs? Thats stupid

i wonder if theres any update on the stats, since they already show the critial but is shown in crap numbers...
I suggest them to learn from warcraft 3 lol, 3 stats boost enough to boost everythng....

Flabble

sigh....hasnt been changed yet...

STR = only melee dmg

DEX = only range dmg

INT = magic dmg / mana pool / mdef

VIT = HP

Never has changed, most likely will not change...

Int actually seems to be pretty useful on all mercs.

Int also increases staff physical damage as well as magic damage/heal.

It kind of makes you wonder why they put all stats on the master rings
